Travers Smith wins "CSR Innovation" Award at Law.com's Innovation Awards

Overview

Travers Smith LLP is delighted to announce it has been awarded the "CSR Innovation" award at the Law.com Innovation Awards.

The firm was awarded the CSR Innovation Awards for their work setting up the Domestic Abuse Response Alliance (DARA), a multi-firm advocacy alliance, representing survivors of domestic abuse who are not eligible for legal aid but who cannot afford to pay for private representation. Led by Sam Cottman, this work included structuring the project, securing funding from multiple funders, creating the governance framework, facilitating expert family law supervision and training for volunteer lawyers and creating a bespoke case management system and website. After the number of at-risk individuals rose during the pandemic, the firm launched DARA, bringing together over 300 lawyers from leading firms to help clients from the National Centre for Domestic Violence access emergency protection.

Since February 2022, DARA lawyers have dedicated over 6,000 hours to securing legal protection for over 80 clients against their abusers. DARA has acted for clients aged 16 – 86 suffering from sexual abuse, physical violence, control, coercion, economic abuse, stalking and harassment. DARA Lawyers have appeared as advocates across the country, each time leading to a life-changing outcome for the client. There are now ten DARA firms:  Travers Smith LLP, Reed Smith LLP, Hogan Lovells International LLP, Latham & Watkins LLP, Slaughter and May, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, DLA Piper UK LLP, Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP.

Sam Cottman, Pro Bono Partner, commented:

"A few years ago, DARA was just an idea. To see it now as an award-winning multi-firm alliance is wonderful. Working with the other nine DARA firms, we are looking forward to further growth and doing all we can to help those in need."

The firm has previously won "Innovation in Responsible Business" at the FT Innovative Lawyer Awards Europe 2023 and the "ESG Initiative" Award at the Legal Business Awards 2022 in recognition of its work establishing DARA.
