Travers Smith LLP has been recommended for ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system, following an independent audit by the British Standards Institute.
The auditor noted that the firm's environmental management system had no non-conformities, and that the firm had a procedure in place for every element of its system.
ISO 14001 is an internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems that is implemented by firms to reduce their environmental impact. It is the second international standard that focuses on the environment that Travers Smith has secured within the last 12 months, following its ISO 50001 certification earlier this year.
The firm is trying to improve its environmental performance in many ways, including:
- In the last 12 months, the firm has attained a recycling rate of 94% in accordance with our stringent 'Nil to Landfill' policy.
- The firm has a bronze rating with ESG verification platform EcoVadis which places Travers Smith in the top 35% of organisations assessed during 2024. EcoVadis ensure that diligence is carried out along supply chains to identify, prevent, or stop Human Rights and Environment issues including climate change, and are aligned to global standards.
- Heat free printing technology is now used throughout the firm's buildings, and the new devices have seen a 94% reduction in energy compared to previously used devices. Desktop printers have been removed from all offices.
- In 2022, Travers Smith partnered with Bees in Our Community to sponsor a beehive. This hive has produced its first 24 jars of honey, all used in the office café Brathwaite's.
- The firm also relaxed its Agile Working Policy over the festive period, saving 14.2 tonnes of carbon emissions by closing parts of its office buildings.
- The firm sends all wastepaper to a facility for shredding which is recycled and integrated back into the business.
- Our staff restaurant, Braithwaite's, and our Client Dining Rooms have recently obtained three stars from the Sustainable Restaurant Association. Travers Smith is the first law firm to be awarded three stars for their commitment to sustainable operations by their in-house kitchen team, rather than a an out-sourced caterer.
