Travers Smith recruits Sebastian Reger as a partner

Overview

Travers Smith LLP has announced today the recruitment of Sebastian Reger, who joins the firm as a partner on 1 October.

Sebastian Reger started his legal career at Freshfields, where he practised between 2004 and 2013. He joined pensions boutique Sackers in 2014, and was promoted to partner in 2015. He is widely regarded as a leading derivatives and structured products lawyer, with a particularly strong reputation in the pensions sector.

Sebastian routinely drafts and negotiates ISDAs, GMRAs and GMSLAs and advises clients on derivatives mandates whether as part of an LDI portfolio or a particular investment strategy. He has significant expertise in leading on longevity transactions and collateralised buy-ins having advised insurers, trustees, custodians and collateral managers. He has also advised a number of pension schemes on setting up and negotiating clearing arrangements for OTC derivative transactions.

Upon his arrival Sebastian will practice in Travers Smith's Derivatives and Structured Products Group and become part of Travers Smith's Pensions Sector Group working alongside the firm's dedicated pensions partners, as well as other lawyers across the firm who routinely advise clients in the pensions sector. Their combined expertise covers the full range of technical legal specialisms, including investment funds, derivatives and structured products, financial services and markets, corporate finance, private equity, finance, tax, employment, outsourcing and commercial contracts, data protection, and dispute resolution. A significant area of work for the Pensions Sector Group is a growing portfolio of longevity, buy-in and buy-out transactions for pension schemes.

Sebastian's expertise in insurance risk transfer transactions for pensions clients spans a decade and includes leading on a multi-billion pound longevity insurance contract involving a pensions trustee-owned captive insurer, which completed earlier this year. This type of work perfectly complements Travers Smith's practice, and will create a comprehensive offering, which is unparalleled in the market.

Travers Smith's Head of Pensions Sector Group, Daniel Gerring said: "Sebastian's experience and expertise in derivatives, insurance risk transfer and structured finance transactions, acting for a range of clients including pension schemes, major investment banks, FTSE 100 companies and private equity houses, will serve to strengthen still further our market leading Derivatives and Structured Products Group and Pensions Sector. I am delighted that he has decided to join our firm and look forward to welcoming him to the team."

Derivatives and Structured Products Partner Jonathan Gilmour said: "Our Derivatives and Structured Products practice has been operating very successfully in the current fast-paced environment, growing and diversifying its portfolio of work year after year. Sebastian's arrival will enable us to further grow our practice and strengthen our position to meet the growing needs of our clients.”

Managing Partner David Patient added: "We warmly welcome Sebastian to the firm and our Pensions Sector Group. We believe that Sebastian is a perfect fit for our practice and that our reputation in providing first-class pensions related advice will be further enhanced by a specialist of his expertise and calibre."
