Travers Smith LLP is delighted to announce the appointments of its Financial Services and Markets partners Tim Lewis and Phil Bartram, to two significant private equity industry positions.
Tim Lewis has been named as Chair of the Regulatory Committee of the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA), while Phil Bartram has assumed the role of Chair of the Tax, Legal and Regulatory Committee of Invest Europe.
Tim is a financial services law and regulation expert, who acts for a wide variety of retail and wholesale financial services institutions, including banks, brokers, investment managers, electronic communications networks, private equity houses, pension fund trustees and hedge funds.
As its Chair, Tim will lead the Regulatory Committee's work in ensuring that the role of the private equity and venture capital industry is presented to policymakers and that the Committee continues to provide an interface between the FCA and the industry. The committee relies on GPs and advisors who freely give their time to represent the industry, responding to consultations and reacting to regulatory change.
Tim Lewis commented: "It is a great privilege to be asked to lead the BVCA Regulatory Committee for the next three years. There will be much for the committee to do in responding to regulatory changes. I am very much looking forward to playing my part."
Phil Bartram’s broad practice encompasses advising financial market participants on law and regulation affecting their business and products. He is counsel to hedge, credit, private equity and real estate fund managers, banks and investment banks, brokers and corporate financiers, exchange-traded product providers and payment institutions.
Invest Europe’s Tax, Legal and Regulatory Committee deals with tax, legal and regulatory matters affecting European private equity and combines the legal expertise of Invest Europe and its national association members. As its Chair, Phil will ensure the Committee cooperates closely with the national associations and provides expert evidence and advice to Invest Europe and its members, while supporting Invest Europe’s wider public and regulatory affairs activities. As a result of his appointment as Chair of the Committee, Phil will also take a seat on the Public Affairs Executive (PAE), which coordinates the public affairs activities between Invest in Europe and the key national trade associations.
Phil Bartram commented: "I am delighted to be taking over as Chair of Invest Europe's Tax, Legal and Regulatory Committee at an important time for the private equity industry. The Committee's immediate focus is on preparing for the European Commission's review of the EU Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive. We will also be working hard to assess the likely effects of Brexit on private equity with a view to ensuring that the pan-European nature of the industry is secured despite the UK's exit from the EU."
